Columbus Day Weekend events
Here in Charlottesville, we don’t spend just one day commemorating the European conquest of the New World — we devote the whole weekend! From my inbox:
This weekend is our Columbus: the Myth and the American Dream Revisited event. You’ve seen the posters, you’ve read about it in the C’ville, maybe you’ve heard about it on WNRN. Well this is it:
EVENT SCHEDULE
FRIDAY OCTOBER 5TH
Natsu Saito at the UVA Art Museum at 5:30PM - FREE
Saito’s work addresses the federal and international legal aspects of the country’s history of the dispossession of indigenous peoples, the notion of Manifest Destiny essential to its territorial expansion, and the government’s participation in the genocide of peoples and cultures. http://law.gsu.edu/directory/saito
The Canary Effect w/ Ward Churchill at Vinegar Hill Theater at 9PM - $15.00
This Award winning documentary offers a fresh and horrifying perspective on the abuses enacted against Native Americans, both historically and in contemporary society. The film includes a re-examination of the Columbus legacy and its on going role in popular culture. Q & A with Churchill to follow.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 6TH
Derrick Jensen & Dana Lyons at Live ARTS at 3PM - $15.00
Jensen and Lyons team up to touch on our assault of the natural world, indigenous cultures, and the very fabric of humanity as seen through a culture and its destructive impulses. Heavy topics intersected with witty, satirical, and downright funny songs that will have you tapping your toes as you engage deeply with the discussion at hand.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 7TH
A Public Forum at Live ARTS at 7PM - FREE
Panel Discussion w/ Churchill, Jensen, and Lyons.
*Moderated by Cathy Harding of the C-ville Weekly
A note to all those Ward Churchill haters out there: I don’t care. I want to go hear views on the edge of reason. I want to hear a speaker who is so outrageously provocative that even tenure couldn’t save him. When I want “fair and balanced” news-o-tainment, I know where I can find it, thanks.
