Next Thursday, October 14: Poetry and War

Jehanne Dubrow will read from and discuss her latest book of poetry, “Stateside,” which takes as its subject her husband’s deployment to Iraq. Jehanne Dubrow is married to an officer in the U.S. Navy and currently lives on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where she is an assistant professor in creative writing and literature at Washington College. In her spare time, she teaches classes at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, MD.

Next Saturday, October 16: The Art of Third Person (half-day seminar)

Instructor: Samar Fitzgerald Cost: $55 Members | $60 Non-Members Saturday, October 16th | 9:00am-1:00pm

Ever feel indecisive about what point of view is best for the story you want to tell? This seminar will explore the artistic advantages of third person storytelling. We’ll break down the mechanics of the third person point of view, question established myths about the third person, and take a close look at famous examples of third-person narratives. We’ll also use short writing prompts to become more comfortable with the point of view.

Tickets for the 2010 Words & Wine WriterHouse Fundraiser are now available!


On Sunday, October 24, 2010, Keswick Vineyards will host the first annual Words and Wine event, a fundraiser for WriterHouse.  Tickets are now available!  Admission includes wine tasting, complimentary wine glass, light hors d’oeuvres, and one raffle ticket towards a number of prizes generously donated from local businesses such as Oasis Day Spa, Live Arts, New Dominion Books, Wahooptie Taxi Company, Gearhart’s Chocolates, Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, Revolutionary Soup, and more!  In addition, Keswick has generously agreed to donate 10% of all event-related wine and merchandise sales to WriterHouse.  Tickets may be purchased from any WriterHouse Board Members, via Paypal at www.writerhouse.org, by calling 434-296-1922, or by stopping by WriterHouse during open hours.

»Susan Gregg Gilmore—After the Debut: The Second Novel. Susan will be back on Sunday, August 22 to discuss her second novel, The Improper Life of Bezellia Grove, answer questions about the publishing process and share insights into the journey from debut novel to sophomore effort. Booklist said, “Gilmore’s second novel (after Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen, 2008) is a highly emotional story that vividly evokes a sense of place, the 1960s era, and the heady feelings of first love.” Free and open to the public. Book signing to follow.

»SAVE THE DATE: WriterHouse Hosts “Words & Wine” on Cctober 24—WriterHouse will be hosting our first annual Words & Wine Fundraiser at Keswick Vineyards on Sunday, October 24th from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. Tickets will go on sale soon and include a wine tasting, light hors d’oeuvres, and one raffle ticket to be entered in a drawing for one of three fabulous gift baskets donated by local Charlottesville businesses.
